On a wintry afternoon, vocalist Marina Khankhalaeva and pianist Allen LeVines met to read through a few classic songs by Duke Ellington. Before summer it was clear that a concert needed to happen. A seasoned singer encompassing all classical genres with an international career, Khankhalaeva’s jazz instincts and delivery reveal a voice with remarkable range, dropping to chocolaty low tones and floating effortlessly up to twinkling crystal highs. Her intense study of Ella Fitzgerald’s vocal artistry is evident in her sublime and dreamy interpretations of every song. LeVines’ early career included work with an array of musicians in Philadelphia and New York jazz clubs and venues. Duke Ellington and Bill Evans are among important influences in his piano styling.
